Find the possibilities in bad situations

My car needed to go in for a major repair earlier this semester and while this was a highly stressful situation, I wanted to turn that situation into an opportunity. By taking it slower and taking a different route (as dictated by the public transportation I used to get to school) I had more time to look at my surroundings. By walking the distance from the bus stop to school I found a bar-restaurant that sounded interesting.

I had to drop my car off quite early in the morning to be able to guarantee that I’d make it to class on time, even if the bus broke down. (This had happened to me before, years ago before I started driving, but needless to say I didn’t make it to class that day.) By leaving as early as I did, and not having any issues with the continued drivability of the bus I was on, I arrived at school over an hour before my classes started.

Whatever did I do with all this free time? Study for the quiz that would happen in class? No, of course not. I went to find food.

Banh Mi Oven is across the street from SJSU. I had seen it before, but had never entered until that morning. I had decided to adopt some of the travel channel recommendations, and asked what they recommended. I purchased a mini pork banh mi, a hot coffee and a Thai iced tea for later.

This was the first time that I’ve ever had a banh mi. I’ve had all the flavors in different dishes, but I’ve never had them all together in this form. I’m not sure that I like the style of bread that it came with, but overall I think that it was good. For strictly scientific reasons I will have to eat quite a few more to have an adequate base for comparison.

I remember ordering the coffee without any expectations, it had been an early start for me and I hadn’t had any caffeine yet, therefore the need for coffee. Unless it was absolutely atrocious I would have been satisfied. Instead I was pleasantly surprised with the chocolatey, almost hickory smoked flavor of the coffee drink. It is sweet, but not cloyingly so. There’s some sort of milk or creamer added to it, but it doesn’t leave the unappealing film of milk fat in your mouth that scalded milk can.
