A little New Orleans in Orlando

I was pleasantly surprised that Universal Studio’s was having a Mardi Gras even while I was there. I volunteered in the New Orleans and Baton Rouge area in 2012.I know that Disney is known for their themed events, but hadn’t heard much about Universal.

During the late afternoon they would open up a special food court area, and each stand had one or two item. I had the crab Etouffee and it was pretty good. They had “food passports” available, where you payed for a lanyard with a set number of meals included. Doing the math, there wasn’t any cost savings so I decided not to get it, but it could be great to give to a kid so that they aren’t walking around with so much cash.

To be honest it was hilarious to see their Mardi Gras parade, because there was so much cultural connotations that seemed to go over the heads of the people in the audience. There were kids on some of the floats throwing beads to the audience, and one float looked to be maned by a church group. The kids in the audience were the ones the most excited about catching the beads as well.

I wonder if they’ll look back at this experience when they’re older and laugh.
